Lapuan Kankurit, a mill based in Lapua, Finland, has over 100 years love of weaving. Starting with a felt boot factory in 1917, the family venture is now headed up by fourth-generation weavers Jaana and Esko Hjelt.
The mill is set in the Ostrobothnian fields region of western Finland and focuses on perfect execution of the craft of weaving in beautiful natural fibres - mostly organic linen, wool, organic cotton, Tencel and mohair. Their 100 percent long-staple linen yarn is grown and spun in Europe according to the Öko-Tex standard. Lapuan Kankurit - Finnish for "weavers of Lapua" - is part of the Masters of Linen, which ensures field-to-mill standards and traceability for European linen. (There are 17 member companies specialising in woven and knitted fabrics in Europe.)
Not only are their base fabrics beautiful, but the designs and patterns that are woven into them are by turns colourful, elegant, and playful. Working with designers like Japan’s Makoto Kagashima and Finland's Marja Rautiainen, Lapuan Kankurit delivers beauty, function and humour in easy-to-fold squares.
